You can save a lot of money by designing and building your own, especially darius/vawt type windmills.  Don't let the name scare you.  VAWT is nothing more than a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine.  Instead of being the standard windmill you see with a propeller, these are vertical.  They catch a lot of wind and don't need to be near the height of the standard propeller type.  Turbulence does not affect them adversely, either.  There are a lot of amazing and interesting designs coming out of Europe due to the fact that Europe is so much ahead of the U.S. on their research.

An interesting twist to the VAWT is the helical vawt.  It is a  very interesting and compact designed wind turbine.  We encourage you to look around on the net for wind turbines, vawts, and helical vawts.  To see them in action, look on You Tube.  There are also sail type vawts.  It is truly amazing and exciting the numerous designs and types of wind turbines being designed and built by homeowners and groups of people all over the world.  Hopefully, when you look around you will become so excited as we have that you will build your own, and I bet you will come up with your own unique design.
